About Diana Velasco

Diana Velasco, head of the Family Healing Center

I was a young mother of 5 children and I found myself yelling, and didn’t want to be that kind of parent. I signed up for a parenting class to get the tools that I didn’t get when I was growing up. It taught me how to provide structure for my kids, how to praise, and how to be consistent in following through. My kids all turned out fabulous and I attribute many of their successes to utilizing the tools that I learned from taking that first class. It was because I provided that kind of environment, not because I was an exceptional mother.

I went back to school at age 40 for my AA and 8 years later I went back at 48 to complete my BA in Human Development from WSU in 2009. Prior to this accomplishment I put a business together with a friend for supervising visitation. Through this business venture I learned all about some of the ugly communication between divorcing parents, and began to teach them how not to bring that toxic communication into their visits.

Shortly after implementing visitation services I started working with families in the home. I realized that parents need a safe environment to share that they’re stuck. I met them without judgment, and walked beside them in their journey; as a result they did better as both individuals and parents and were able to use the tools that I brought into their homes. I love to work in the home with families; I come in and over time I become part of their family as a team player.

Teaching classes evolved. By nature I’m a shy person, and getting in front of a group was terrifying. As hard as it was for me to get up in front of people, I realized that I could reach more people than working one on one. I remember sitting in front of 20 parents, and one of them ‘got it’ and started changing their parenting. I realized that just planting small seeds can manifest into something quite beautiful for the parents. And because the parent gets it, the kids are going to benefit.

I founded the Family Healing Center in 2014 to allow me to do my best creative work in an independent environment. It allowed me to work ‘outside the box’ and match the unique needs of each family.

I teach with my daughter Tessa who is trained in all the curricula. She has a passion for it too, and she’s really good. She has toddlers herself, and can speak to the parents who have young children. We work intuitively together, it’s really quite nice. We love the work that we do.
